Adult Education - Previous Classes

Part 1: G-d and Caesar: Dueling Kingdoms

This series by the Rev. Dr. Harry Coverston is presented in three segments. He gave this presentation at the Nature Coast Unitarian Fellowship and then at St. Richard’s, Winter Park. This is the first segment of that presentation. The succeeding two segments will be posted once they are presented.]

The January 6 insurrection thus produced a bizarre combination of nationalism, deadly force and religion, the elements that mark Christian Nationalism. There is no small irony in the fact that while Christian nationalism legitimates itself in the name and tradition of Jesus, its values are those of the empire who crucified him. Whatever else the MAGA movement is about, it’s not about Jesus’ kingdom of G-d.

Part 2: G-d and Caesar II – Messiahs and Antichrists

This is the second segment of the presentation by the Rev. Dr. Coverston.

“Ironically, while MAGA legitimates itself in the name of a Christ who came to save believers from sin through his crucifixion, its values bear more resemblance to those of the Roman Empire who crucified the Jesus the empire saw as a potential threat to its interests than either the long awaited deliverer of the oppressed Hebrew people or the Christian messiah whose self-sacrifice provided salvation from sin to those who believed the church’s doctrine.”

This is the presentation from the second of three adult education Lenten classes offered at St. Richard’s Episcopal Church, Winter Park, FL. You are invited to view the remainder of my latest blog entry at the link provided below. Thoughtful responses are welcomed.

It is important to have the difficult and critical conversations in our lives sooner rather that later. Too many of us delay these conversations, causing stress and conflict because our loved ones haven’t been prepared for and aren’t aware of our wishes. This series is designed for those getting older or nearing the end of life, for those who have aging parents or relatives, and for anyone of all ages who wants to begin planning early. The topics were led by a variety of facilitators with expertise on the topic of discussion. Much of the material for this series will come from "The Conversation Project" and you can peruse the website via this link:
